The importance of natural or bio-based insulation materials is growing. Customers find it important that insulation materials, and the entire construction process, are climate neutral and circular. Insulation from wood wool and cellulose flakes have been around for some time, but insulation materials such as (lime) hemp, cork, flax, grass fibre, cotton and sheep's wool are now also available.
Benefits for the customer
Besides their good thermal properties, these natural insulation materials also excel due to their moisture-regulating properties and high heat storage capacity. Additionally, they also have good acoustic insulation properties due to their fibre structure. The use of these insulation materials helps to create a healthy indoor climate. Last but not least, the materials are made fire-resistant and rot- or mould-free by using environmentally-friendly additives.
For the planet
The biggest benefit of these insulation materials is for the planet.. The raw materials of these natural insulation materials occur inexhaustibly in nature. The insulation material is 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable. For this insulation, the term Cradle to Cradle applies perfectly: after their life in one product all the used materials can be reused in another product.
On top of this, only a limited amount of energy is consumed for the production of this insulation.
Natural insulation has a positive carbon footprint, because the CO2 emitted during the various stages of production and product life is less than the CO2 captured by the raw materials of the insulation materials as they grow.
