Geopolitical Tensions: What is the impact on Our Cloud Data?

12.02.2026
With recent news about increasing geopolitical tensions (especially between the EU and the US), it’s natural that questions arise about cloud services and where our data is stored. Are we still safe using current cloud platforms?

Below is some further insight in the IPCOM view and strategy:

Microsoft Cloud remains our strategy

Microsoft Cloud and Microsoft 365 remain our chosen collaboration platform.

This choice is deliberate and based on strong reasons: security, reliability, modern collaboration, and compliance support. Recent changes in the geopolitical situation has not fundamentally changed this direction.

Data centers

Where is our data stored?

When we use Microsoft 365 (Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive), our emails and documents are stored in European data centers. Data is not copied to any other region or continent.

This setup has been further strengthened since 2025 through Microsoft’s EU Data Boundary initiative, which reinforces that customer data for European tenants stays within Europe.

backup

Why backup is still essential

Even with strong cloud protections, backup remains essential. Backup is not about mistrust — it’s about preparedness.

In any recovery or crisis scenario, the first and most important step is having your data. If the data is available:

  • Systems can be restored
  • Services can be rebuilt
  • Alternative solutions can be used if needed

Simply put: If we have the data, we have options.

In short

Microsoft Cloud stays our strategy.
Our data stays in Europe.
Backup ensures we remain in control — even if circumstances change.

This balanced approach allows us to benefit from modern cloud services while staying prepared for unexpected situations.
